A veteran head myself (of a certain era...first show: 1979 (w/Keith & donna; last show: 1994)...I agree wholly...when they were bad, they were REALLY bad...the evidence is right here on the archive. Still--I never had a "bad time" at any show I attended, which also says something about the atmosphere Deadheads created for these musical events (and that's what they were).

That said, the flip side is true: When they were on, they were the BEST live band I've ever seen, and I've seen a lot of heavy hitters (Who, Stones, Pretenders, Clapton, Meters, etc.) terms of sheer improvisational inspired aural ecstacy, the Dead remain un-matched.
